2004 - 2005 Wet Season

The 2004 - 2005 wet saw 37 Severe weather events affect the Northern Territory, of which, 13 affected Darwin and its immediate surrounds. Included in this 37 severe events were 4 tornadoes, 3 tropical cyclones and 2 hail events.

Some notable events from the season :

15th November 2004 - A small squall line formed near Jabiru in the afternoon and moved across Darwin in the early evening, bringing a 109 km/h gust to Noonamah and felling several trees in the Darwin suburbs of Ludmilla and Fannie Bay.

2nd December 2004 -
a thunderstorm produced hailstones the size of a 20 cent piece at Wooliana, about 4 kilometres north of Mango Farm in the northwest Top End. The same storm produced wind gusts that damaged mango trees and bushes in Mango Farm.

17th December 2004 -
Storm activity was also severe about the northwest Top End on the 17th with a 106 km/h gust recorded at Lee Point. The same storm damaged dozens of trees across Darwin and brought down the wall of a half constructed house. Power was cut to over 60,000 homes across Darwin, Palmerston and Katherine after lightning hit the Channel Island power station.

3rd January 2005 -
a monsoon squall in the late afternoon produced a 110km/h gust at Charles Point (35 kilometres west of Darwin). A funnel cloud was reported off East Point in Darwin. A second monsoon squall line produced a 91km/h gust at Charles Point later that evening.

18th January 2005 - Damage to large trees was reported in Humpty Doo. Wind gusts broke off many large branches, and a few large tree trunks were snapped in half.

11-14 March 2005 - Severe tropical cyclone Ingrid made landfall as a Category 5 Tropical cyclone at Elcho Island on the 12th of March. Ingrid caused significant damage to Elcho Island, North Goulburn Island, Croker Island, and the Cobourg Peninsula. The Wessel Islands north of Gove recorded an average wind speed of 165 km/h. Gove airport experienced its record daily rainfall total for March of 192mm. The maximum wind gust recorded was north of the Top End at 207 km/h on McCluer Island
